Our second guest is Tamara Leigh the Founder/Owner of Tamera Leigh, LLC – Tamara Leigh Engaging Your Audience to TREND ON! As a Communications Expertise Company, she created Tamara Leigh, LLC to bring under one umbrella the broad range of her talents and services to meet the needs of clients on multiple communications platforms.

Tamara’s greatest accomplishments are her 5 children, who in spite of extremely challenging circumstances, have grown into young adults with an enjoyment of life and others, resiliency and sense of humor, and individual strength of character. Credit is due to a solid family foundation that was laid early in their home. Tamara loves her job as Mom!

In 2011, Tamara taught English at a German corporation and German high school–a wonderful experience with the people, region, and culture. She and her daughters traveled Europe, visiting France, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and the UK.  She is grateful to dear friends who made this exceptional professional and personal experience possible.

Life surprises her all the time, in Forrest Gump-like fashion and mostly good, but on those occasions when it turns out a lot harder than she ever imagined, she never gives up working to change it for the better. Serendipity and a bit of “je ne sais quoi” have helped. Strong Communication (written and oral) and People skills haven’t hurt. After “College Interrupted,” she earned a BA in Communications while working full-time and single-parenting. Milwaukee Film Fest Collaborative Cinema Recommendation,  “Our mentors [were] impressed with Tamara’s writing style and a general sense of dramatic/comedic build-up.” To learn more about Tamara visit her LinkedIn Profile at:https://www.linkedin.com/in/tamaraleigh/

Asher Smith, Litigation Manager for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Foundation. Today’s topic is a lawsuit to stop John’s Hopkins University, barn owls are being subjected to deadly experiments conducted by students.

Although great strides have been made by animal right activists over the years, animal experimentation—which can be replaced with everything from organs-on-a-chip to whole human DNA these days – still goes on in laboratories around the country.  Some institutions use tax funds to conduct antiquated and harmful research on caged, domestic and wild animals. At John’s Hopkins University, barn owls are being subjected to deadly experiments conducted by students, in which the birds’ skulls are cut open and electrodes implanted in their brains. The owls are then restrained and bombarded with bright lights and loud noises for hours on end, eventually being killed.

These experiments continue in part because the Helm’s Amendment to the federal Animal Welfare Act, unfairly excludes “birds . . . bred for use in research, from coverage under the Act.” This has stripped the Secretary of Agriculture of the discretion to issue or enforce standards, rules and regulations for their humane treatment, something PETA is suing to correct.
