Our next guest is John Barker, President and CEO of the Ohio Restaurant Association (ORA), he will discuss HR 582 and its devastating effects on small, family-owned restaurants and their employees who would face higher labor costs and possibly forced to reduce employee hours. He’ll also give some common-sense tips to the minimum wage issue that reflects the economic realities of Ohio.

Congress recently introduced legislation titled the “Raise the Wage Act” (H.R. 582/S.150) that would increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 per hour by 2024 and would index it to median wage growth thereafter eliminating the tip credit. $15 in New York is not $15 in Ohio so a “one size fits all” approach to this issue could severely cripple restaurants leading to job losses, shift reductions and even closings. The bill also eliminates the tip credit where current tipped employees average $19-$25 per hour.  If the tip credit ends, employees will likely earn less than now.

The economic realities of each state should be examined especially in areas where workers do not face the cost of living they do in major cities.  Passing a $15 per hour starting wage in rural areas would have stifling impacts to restaurants and other small businesses who can’t absorb it.  Higher wages would lead to employers cutting back on workers’ hours and/or eliminating positions, thereby hurting those it was intended to help.  Additionally, when labor costs rise, employers in labor-intensive industries such as restaurants are forced to raise menu prices to maintain profitability, thereby driving up consumer costs. Our next guest is Priscilla Rodriguez, Executive Director of Scholarships Strategy at the College Board. She will discuss how The College Board Provides Tips on SAT Prep, College Planning & How to Earn College Board Opportunity Scholarships

She leads the organization’s work on extending access to college for students through scholarships, including the development of the College Board Opportunity Scholarships program. Prior to joining the College Board, Priscilla was an SVP at the Poses Family Foundation, where she led the Webby-winning resource for parents of children with learning and attention issues, Understood.org. Priscilla is a first-generation American of Colombian and German heritage and a graduate of the University of Virginia and Harvard Business School.

 

Our last guest is Dr. Donna McCree, associate director for health equity, Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention she will talk about the critical role of increasing HIVtesting as part of the proposed federal initiative to end the HIV epidemic and what everyone can do to support this goal.

Donna Hubbard McCree, PhD, MPH, RPh, is the inaugural associate director for health equity, Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (DHAP), National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The DHAP Office of Health Equity was established in September 2010 to provide leadership on understanding the determinants of and strategies for addressing HIV and AIDS-related health inequities. Prior to accepting this position, she was Team Leader/Behavioral Scientist, Intervention Research Team, Prevention Research Branch, DHAP, NCHHSTP, where she led a 22-member multidisciplinary group of scientists including postdoctoral fellows and Commissioned Corp Officers charged with using the epidemiological and surveillance data to develop, conduct, and evaluate the efficacy of new and previously untested behavioral interventions for populations most at risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV.  She was also a Behavioral Scientist and Fellow in the Division of STD Prevention, Behavioral Interventions and Research Branch, NCHHSTP, CDC.

Our first guest today is Rev. Bill Owens, long-time Civil Rights advocate, educator, and president of the Coalition of African American Pastors (CAAP). Rev. Owens  held a Joint Press Conference this past week  along with David Welch, president of the U.S. Pastor Council, at the press conference, they  declared a boycott of Nike until it severs its relationship with former pro athlete Colin Kaepernick.

Following the comments by Kaepernick on the American founding and Nike’s willingness to cater to his extremist views, Owens and Welch felt that such attacks could not go unchecked. “Mr. Kaepernick’s limited and narrow-minded understanding of history weakens who we are as Americans,” stated Rev. Owens. “It ignores the journey we have made as a country – as Americans of all races, creeds, and colors – and approaches American ideals and history in an insultingly simplistic way.

Leftists like Mr. Kaepernick do not understand the historical value of our shared American experience. He wants to turn history into a children’s story and expunge it of its deeper lessons and nuances. But that is not just impossible; it’s a detriment to any civilized society. We cannot expunge history: It’s our guide, teacher, and inspiration. It should motivate us to move forward, not tear it down or hide what made us who we are.

“By calling for a boycott of Nike, we are setting a standard. Americans must send a strong message to Nike and activists like Kaepernick who want to fundamentally transform our country. We will not tolerate anti-American politics in our advertising, media, or the companies we patronize. We stand for America,” concluded Rev. Bill Owens.
