Jack Kosakowski, President and CEO, Junior Achievement, he discusses the career preferences of teens based on a new survey.

A new Junior Achievement (JA)/Ernst & Young survey of 13-17 year olds shows that a whopping 91% of teens between the ages of 13 and 17 know what they want to be when they grow up. However, career preferences remain clearly drawn along gender lines—more than one-third of the boys are interested in careers in STEM and half the girls are hoping to focus on the arts and healthcare.

“While it’s encouraging to see that today’s teens are giving a great deal of thought to their career aspirations, it’s disappointing to see that girls’ interest in STEM careers continues to lag significantly behind boys’ interest,” said Jack E. Kosakowski, president and CEO of JA. He noted that based on the survey results, JA will be placing greater emphasis on getting STEM professionals to volunteer for classes.
