Having unpaid taxes or back taxes can lead to a variety of tax problems including significant tax penalties. Back taxes are simply money (or a return) that you owe to the Internal Revenue Service. When you miss a payment, you owe “back taxes.” If you continue to miss payments, you’ll begin accruing penalties and interest immediately. The IRS will then classify your back taxes as “tax debt” and make every attempt to collect.
